The social and solidarity economy encompasses enterprises and organizations such as cooperatives, mutual benefit societies, associations, foundations and social enterprises, which have the specific feature of producing goods, services and knowledge while pursuing both economic and social aims and fostering solidarity.
The training activities of the Centre are designed to disseminate knowledge on strategies and tools to promote employment through the development of organizations in the social and solidarity economy. Particular attention is given to the development of cooperatives. The ILO considers cooperatives important for improving the living and working conditions of women and men globally, and for making essential infrastructure and services available even in areas neglected by the State and by investor-driven enterprises.
