Labour Migration Academy for the first time in Africa

news - 07/12/2016
Held in English and French, an Academy on Enhancing Protection, Promoting Sustainable Development and Facilitating Fair and Effective Labour Migration Governance takes place in Johannesburg, South Africa from 5 to 9 December 2016.

share:

Today, there are an estimated 244 million international migrants around the world. Globalisation, demographic shifts, conflicts, income inequality and climate change will encourage ever more people to cross borders in search of employment and security.  The migration process entails complex challenges in terms of governance, migrant workers’ protection, migration and development linkages, international cooperation, and it is linked, directly or indirectly, to the world of work and the quest for decent work opportunities, either within countries or across international borders.

This Academy is an occasion for stakeholders dealing with migration issues to address the regional dimension of labour migration more effectively. Policy planners, representatives of workers' and employers' organisations and experts from international development agencies will acquire advanced knowledge to better understand labour migration challenges and opportunities in a changing political, economic and social context.

The content is drawing upon the ILO Agenda on Fair Migration and other key outcomes, such as the 2013 Conclusions of the Tripartite Technical Meeting on Labour Migration, the 2006 ILO Multilateral Framework on Labour Migration and the 2004 International Labour Conference plan of action for migrant workers.

The next edition will be held in July 2017.
