His Royal Highness Crown Prince Haakon of Norway, a special guest at the “UN Summer Academy”
HRH Crown Prince Haakon of Norway accepted an invitation to speak at the Centre on 29 August 2012
Mr Jafar Javan, Deputy Director of the UNSSC, introduced the special guest with the words, “Supporting the UN is a family affair for the Norwegian royal family”.
The Norwegian royal family has indeed been supporting the UN for many years. In 2003, Crown Prince Haakon was appointed Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), focussing on the UN Millennium Development Goals and the effort to cut global poverty in half by 2015.
Animating an interesting session at the Academy, Prince Haakon emphasized the UN’s ability to build sustainable peace through attainment of the Millennium Development Goals by 2015, with particular attention to:
- poverty alleviation
- population growth
- climate and natural resources
Crown Prince Haakon was an active member of Young Global Leaders (YGL), a forum operating under the auspices of the World Economic Forum, from its launch in 2005 until autumn 2010. He has chaired the YGL work group for the Global Redesign Initiative since 2009 and became a member of The Foundation Board of the YGL Community. In 2006, the Crown Prince founded the Global Dignity initiative with two other YGL members.
