Torch of Peace lights up Turin Campus
An enthusiastic crowd today welcomed the arrival on campus of the runners in the World Harmony Run, a global torch relay that seeks to promote international friendship and understanding. As a symbol of harmony, runners carry a flaming torch, passing it from hand to hand as they travel through more than 100 nations.
After words of welcome from Mr Dipavahjan Reiner, President of WHR Europe, and the Centre’s Director, François Eyraud, on behalf of the three Turin-based UN organizations (the ITC-ILO, the UNSSC and UNICRI), Ms June Wilson (Bahamas) gave a moving speech on behalf of the hundreds of course participants, collaborators, visitors and staff members attending the event. Ms Liliana Tessaris of WHR Italy then presented Ms. Wilson with a small olive tree, a symbol of peace, to be planted on the campus.
A long and joyful multi-ethnic human chain then stretched out along the campus pathways and passed the torch from hand to hand as a sign of peace and fraternity, values enshrined in the UN mandate.
