The Centre at the International Conference on Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET)
The Centre will participate in the TVET Conference on “Enhancement of Skills for Social Integration, Inclusive Growth and Sustainable Development”, in Colombo, Sri Lanka, on 15-16 July 2014.
Recognising the importance of skills development, the President of Sri Lanka has declared 15th July 2014 National Skills Day. This international conference will coincide with National Skills Day.
Sri Lanka's experience in implementing TVET reforms under the National Vocational Qualifications framework over the past ten years set an example to other developing countries, especially in South Asia. The country has recognised the need to innovate and adapt to the changing needs of industry and the labour market so that youth are equipped with a skills set that matches and caters to the demands of this labour market. Education and training have a crucial role to play in the successful transition of economies to green and clean development, concepts that are becoming increasingly relevant globally in the promotion of inclusive growth.
Approximately 200 policy-makers, practitioners and experts from the TVET sector, representatives of the business community, bilateral and multilateral institutions, implementing agencies, and academia will take part in the event.
Presentations and discussions will focus on lessons learned and challenges faced by those engaged in the sector, in implementing vocational training and skills development programmes in different contexts around the world. Expert resource persons from international projects and programmes will present papers on successful experiences in these key thematic areas.
The Centre’s presentation will cover “Best practices in entrepreneurship development in the SME sector – with a case study from South Africa”.
