The way to development starts in Turin
On Friday 20 November, the International Training Centre of the ILO will launch the Turin School of Development at the official opening of the 2009/2010 Academic Year.
Beautiful? Even more so....
The Turin Centre is definitely embellishing itself. This month, it will see several changes in terms of renovation and moves. Most of the exhibition held in Turin in 1961, to celebrate Italy’s centenary as a unified nation, took place on the premises that have become the campus of the International Training Centre. They have been renovated several times since then, most thoroughly ahead of the 2006 Turin Olympic Winter Games.
If not here, then where? If not now, then when?
It is time to share best practice and to learn from each other in a participatory, experiential environment. The “Turin 2009 Learning Link” from 7 to 11 December 2009 will illustrate how.

Decent Work and Football
The 2010 FIFA World Cup is being hosted by the Republic of South Africa. This opportunity has come at a very good time from South Africa's point of view. Despite promises of economic growth, the country has 46% unemployment, a recession in the construction sector, and nearly 90% of its workforce in the unofficial sector. The growth in the construction labour force stimulated by the World Cup has brought a yearned-for change for the better. At least 3.2 billion euros are being invested in stadiums, transport, communication and hotels. When it was first known that South Africa would be hosting the World Cup, the over 30,000 building workers hoped for working conditions that would lead to a better life.
Action programme to mobilize the social economy in Africa
The objective of the regional conference on “The social economy: Africa’s response to the global crisis”, being held in Johannesburg from 19 to 21 October 2009, is to adopt an action programme to mobilize the social economy in Africa in response to the crisis, at local, national and regional levels.
Choosing work or family or both. Does gender matter?
The massive and irreversible inclusion of Latin American and Caribbean women in the workforce has highlighted the challenges of the traditional interplay between work and family life. Relieving these tensions is an essential step towards gender equality and more productive economies, says a joint report from the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
