Regional Conference and Training Course for Judges and Arbitrators – Asia and Pacific Region (Melbourne, 17-22 June 2012)

After the successful organization of a “Regional Conference and Training Course for Judges and Arbitrators - Asia and Pacific Region” in Melbourne in 2010, the International Labour Standards, Rights at Work and Gender Equality (ILSGEN) Programme organized a second edition in collaboration with Fair Work Australia in 2012.

Participants included judges from courts and tribunals that deal with labour disputes as well as arbitrators from fifteen countries: Australia, Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Republic of Korea, Malaysia, Nepal, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vanuatu and Vietnam.

The two-day conference was devoted to presenting and discussing labour dispute resolution systems in Asia and the Pacific Region, relevant challenges and perspectives and major courts cases, with a view to improving experience sharing and networking in the region.

The objective of the four-day course was to train judges and arbitrators in using international labour law to resolve domestic labour disputes. The activity provided an in-depth examination of the international labour standards system, the ways in which international labour law can be used to settle labour disputes, and international labour standards in key areas such as freedom of association, the right to collective bargaining, equality in employment and occupation, and termination of employment. Throughout the course illustrations of judicial decisions that used ILS were provided drawing on the research carried out at ILSGEN in this field. Resource persons included ITC-ILO and ILO officials and the former Chairperson of the ILO Committee of Experts on the Application of Conventions and Recommendations.
