The Enterprise, Microfinance and Local Development Programme uses the results of ILO research to design courses and training packages. Its courses focus on disseminating good practice and methodology. Training draws on the expertise of the global team of ILO enterprise development and social finance specialists.

Enterprises are important sources of employment and decent work. Training in enterprise development covers good practice in supporting business creation and growth. Training on enterprise development also covers the business enabling environment, value chains, corporate social responsibility, and the economic, social and environmental aspects of running a sustainable enterprise.  Microfinance training aims at better management of microfinance institutions to help them reach the poor with financial services. Local development uses participatory approaches to improve the effectiveness of regional and municipal government agencies in developing local economies and for creating better jobs for men and women.

The Programme has an internationally recognized track record in developing state-of-the-art training packages and distance education courses in several languages: Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Portuguese and Spanish (and Russian on demand).

It also has a strong capacity for organizing large international events such as seminars on business development services, conferences on business-environment reform and the annual Boulder microfinance training programme.
