Africa

Africa is making social and economic progress in a range of areas but serious development challenges remain, including economic fragility, unemployment, poverty, political crisis and HIV/AIDS. To meet these challenges, the people of Africa need to build up their skills. Human resources development is the key to this.

The International Labour Organization promotes decent work opportunities for all in Africa. Decent work means employment with social protection, having a voice through social dialogue, and international labour standards being respected.

The ILO’s International Training Centre works in and with Africa to strengthen the capacity of governments, workers’ organizations, employers’ organizations and other civil society bodies to solve problems, and to devise policies and manage systems that promote decent work. It does so through training.

In 2008, over 2600 people from African countries took part in our training. We hold courses in English, French and Portuguese in Turin, in many different countries and on-line. Our priority topics for Africa include:

    • vocational training systems and skills development;
    • enterprise development and microfinance;
    • employment-intensive public investment;
    • HIV-AIDS in the workplace;
    • youth employment;
    • migration.
