Around the world, local governments play a key role in providing of social services and promoting economic development. Social innovation means doing things differently. Increasingly, public and private actors manage to bring human and technological capacities together to deliver life-changing outcomes for their communities. This course provides local policy makers and their public and private partners with the necessary insights to promote social innovation in a local context, deal with some of the stumbling blocks, and ensure desirable social and labour market outcomes.

Course objectives

Course objectives

Making SDGs work at the local level will very much depend on the local government’s ability to engage in a process of co-creating ecosystems for social innovation: detecting social needs through a process of combining public and private actors, human and technological capacities, social innovation provides local governments with strategic tools to identify and implement viable solutions.

The course aims to provide insights to promote social innovation in a local context, combining the training experience of the ILO with contributions from international experts on the topic.

Participants will be able to:

  • Learn methodologies and approaches to social innovation;
  • Acquire strategic skills to implement social innovation at the local level;
  • Gain diverse perspectives on social innovation implementation through the analysis of good practices;
  • Share experiences and knowledge with global peers.

  • Officials of international organizations working on localizing SDGs.

Structure and content

The five days course consists of a combination of:

  • Methodological and practical tools presented and discussed in a series of classes facilitated by ILO and leading international and national experts;
  • Structured knowledge-sharing opportunities, making use of interactive learning methodologies;
  • Study visits to explore good practices of social innovation.
