This course helps enterprise development practitioners to design and implement market-driven value-chain development initiatives using a participatory approach. The course will present and analyse the principles and rationality behind value-chain development, provide a detailed analysis of the different phases (sector selection, value-chain analysis, intervention design and implementation), share different techniques for market systems facilitation, and discuss the differences between facilitation and direct delivery (and the respective benefits) . The course content will be based on experience of value-chain development projects and initiatives implemented in developing and middle-income countries by the ILO and other development organizations.

Target audience
Target audience
The course is designed for practitioners of market-driven small-enterprise development projects, including programme staff, managers and development partners. Participants in previous training courses have included staff from UN Women, the International Labour Organization, GIZ, central banks, the International Trade Centre, ministries of urban and rural development, and the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Institute.

Learning outcomes
The training builds on the ILO’s experience in Value Chain Development to provide an overview of fundamental market development principles, and to teach practical skills for the design and implementation of VCD initiatives using a facilitative approach.
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- apply the principles and phases of Value Chain Development for decent work (Sector Selection, Value Chain Analysis, Intervention Design, and Implementation)
- contribute to the design and implementation of market driven value chain development projects using a participatory approach.
- apprehend the techniques for market systems facilitation, and appreciate the differences (and benefits) between facilitation and direct delivery.

Programme
The 2019 edition features 10 day training programme that includes a basic and advanced module.
You can choose to attend (1) the first week and receive basic training on value chain development, (2) the second week and follow the advanced training programme or (3) come for the full 10 day training programme.
