Creating winning ideas to build a bridge to the future

The winners of the competition for Italian school students, “Let’s make peace”, will visit the Campus on 8 and 9 February 2010.

This competition was launched last October 2009, sponsored by GUNA and with the support of the Italian Ministry of Education, in the context of the “World march for peace and non-violence”, the first ever World March that travels the world asking for the end of wars, the dismantling of nuclear weapons and the end to all forms of violence (physical, economic, racial, religious, cultural, sexual and psychological).

The international march commenced last 2 October, World Day for non-violence and birth date of Mahatma Gandhi, from Wellington (New Zealand) and ended on 2 January 2010 in Punta de Vacas, Argentina, after 200,000 kilometers.

The works, submitted by 136 classes in 72 different schools and 17 Italian regions, were evaluated both on the basis of the emotions conveyed and their uniqueness, together with their accuracy.

The following outputs from three classes were selected:

  • A game on peace and non-violence, based on universal symbols for people with disabilities;
  • A photo album on the theme “Peace”;
  • A video on the differences of life style between developed and less developed countries.

The prize consisted of a three-day journey to Turin including a visit to the UN Campus.  During this visit, 60 students, accompanied by 6 teachers, will have the opportunity to have meetings with UN officials and be exposed to debates on non-violence and main themes of action for the UN organisations on Campus (ITC-ILO, UNICRI and UNSCC).

This experience will allow students to acquire new competences and a better knowledge on the above themes, that they will be able to share with their young mates on return to school.
