The Director of the Centre, Patricia O’Donovan, accompanied the ILO Director-General Guy Ryder on his official visit to Italy last week
During the visit, Italy ratified the Maritime Labour Convention, 2006. Italy ranks third among ILO Members in terms of number of ratified Conventions (112).
At a meeting with President Napolitano at the Quirinale Palace, the youth unemployment situation affecting Italy and other European countries was discussed, and the major challenge that it poses to democracy and social cohesion.
The ILO Delegation also met with the President of the Council of Ministers, Mr Letta and with several cabinet ministers, including Minister Kyenge, Minister for Integration and Minister Bonino, Minister for Foreign Affairs. Minister Bonino confirmed Italy’s support for the ILO reform process and the important role of the International Training Centre in Turin in support of the reform process.
Meetings were also held with the Italian social partners including Mr. Squinzi, President of CONFINDUSTRIA, Ms Camusso, Secretary-General, CGIL, Mr. Bonanni, Secretary- General, CISL and Mr. Angeletti, Secretary-General, UIL.
The Director-General offered the ILO and the Centre’s support and collaboration on youth employment and migration and trafficking issues, as the Government of Italy prepares to take over the EU Presidency in the second half of 2014.
