Disability inclusion in the workplace as a strategic advantage

People with disabilities are 15 per cent of the world’s population, that’s one billion people, and yet, they are significantly more unemployed and under-employed than their nondisabled peers.

People with disabilities represent a significant untapped source of talent for employers and a market segment for businesses that includes not only the person with a disability but their family and friends. Businesses and employers are realising that disability inclusion in the workplace is a competitive advantage that has been overlooked for too long.

To address this changing perspective on disability inclusion and to help organizations seize this opportunity, the Centre, in partnership with Cornell University, has created an online self-learning course named “Disability in the Workplace: A Global Perspective.”

The 90-minute self-learning course is designed for employers and their representatives, such as HR professionals, to enable them to design and implement a disability-inclusive strategy more efficiently and skillfully.

After completing the course, you or your staff and colleagues will be able to:

  • Articulate the business case for hiring, retaining and advancing individuals with disabilities;
  • Identify the related international regulations that support disability-inclusive employer policies and practices;
  • Discuss the policies and practices needed within their organization to facilitate disability inclusion across the employment process;
  • Design and initiate a disability-inclusive strategy tailored to their organization.

Brief videos of international specialised experts and people with disabilities are provided as well as checklists, interactive quizzes and exercises. The course also allows access to self-assessment tools and resources for further learning.

This course is not too time-consuming and can get you started on how to make disability inclusion a reality in your organization.

The course has been launched now to honour the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.
