Food for Thought on the Green Economy

Experts to discuss green growth assessment methodologies at the Centre on 29-30 October 2012, during the “Salone del Gusto and Terra Madre” Slow Food Festival 2012 in Turin.

Following the Rio+20 Conference held in June, many countries are interested in using the opportunities provided by the green economy to stimulate growth, create jobs and enhance social inclusion. Although a large variety of approaches and operational tools have already been developed by international agencies and research institutes to assess the green potential of countries, no thorough discussion has taken place at the international level on how research can be further improved and standardised to inform future policy options.

Taking the opportunity offered by the International Slow Food Festival “Salone del Gusto & Terra Madre’ to be held in Turin and dedicated this year to ‘Foods that change the world’, the ITC-ILO has been chosen as an appropriate venue for this exchange of knowledge and experience.

Organised by the ILO Green Jobs Programme in collaboration with the DCED Working Group on Green Growth and UNEP , the Inter-Agency Expert Meeting on “Assessing Opportunities for Growth and Inclusion in the Green Economy” will bring together staff from international agencies, research institutes and country delegates involved in green growth assessments, in order to:

  • increase shared knowledge on approaches, research and operational tools applied in selected countries;
  • identify options for greater agency collaboration and country applications on how the green economy can contribute to achieving sustainable growth, social inclusion and development, as called for in the Rio+20 Outcome Document.

The biennial Terra Madre and Slow Food Festival taking place on the same dates in Turin will provide additional opportunities to learn about green food-processing value chains as an expression of changing patterns of production and consumption.
