Master Trainers' Meeting

A mid-term evaluation of the project on “Improving Working Conditions in the Ready Made Garment (RMG) Programme” was conducted this April in Dhaka, Bangladesh

Since 2014, the ILO RMG Team in Dhaka, the Centre, the Bangladesh Employers Federation, the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and the Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Associations (BKMEA) have been working to strengthen a culture of safety in the workplace and implement practical measures to reduce the risk of accidents.

The current phase of the project,  “Building the capacity of OSH systems”, aims to boost the capacity of workers, supervisors and managers in the RMG sector to improve the safety of their workplaces.

The project currently covers 585 companies (out of 3,700) in the RMG sector, with a total workforce of around 1.4 million (out of 4.3 million employed by RMG sector companies).

Over the last two years, the Centre, in collaboration with the RGM Team in Dhaka, has supported employers’ organizations in building their capacity as training providers in the area of OSH by creating a pool of 100 master trainers working with the BEF, the BGMEA and the BKMEA. These master trainers have been deployed in the 585 companies to deliver training sessions to around 8,000 middle-level managers and supervisors.

The combination of attending blended training courses and themselves delivering training sessions at factory level has been key to ensuring the constitution of a talented group of trainers, who now have the capacity to roll out basic training in OSH within the context of the project and more widely.

Finally, from January 2017 to date, more than 10,000 awareness-raising sessions have been organized and information provided to up to 500,000 workers. By the end of June, the project is expected to have provided information and awareness-raising sessions to 750,000 workers.

In quantitative terms, this is one of the biggest training and awareness-raising projects rolled out by the ILO in recent years.
