Torch of Peace lights up Turin Campus again
As in 2008, an enthusiastic crowd today welcomed the arrival on campus of the runners in the World Harmony Run, a global torch relay that seeks to promote international friendship and understanding. As a symbol of harmony, runners carry a flaming torch, passing it from hand to hand as they travel through more than 100 nations.
Ms Patricia O’Donovan, the Centre’s Director, Mr Jafar Javan, Director of the UNSSC and Mr Jonathan Lucas, UNICRI Director, welcomed the “Torch of Peace” runners on behalf of the three Turin-based UN organizations, course participants, collaborators, visitors and staff members attending the event.
The “Torch of Peace” runners were then met by a group of staff joggers, accompanied by pupils of a Turin primary school who sang a song. During the event, an olive tree was donated to the Campus.
A long and joyful multi-ethnic human chain, started by the local official ambassador of the Run, Mr Marco Berry, then stretched out along the campus pathways and passed the torch from hand to hand as a sign of peace and fraternity, values enshrined in the UN mandate
