Twi-plomacy 2.0: Diplomacy in the Twitter Age

On 14 June, a Conference on “Twi-plomacy 2.0, Diplomacy in the Twitter Age”, took place at the ILO Turin Centre campus. This recent digital development has created a new context for all. A large number of international politicians now have an official Twitter account and are “tweeting” more and more to get their views across, allowing greater transparency. Through social media, individuals can send direct public messages to their political representative, reinforcing democracy, as many more people can voice their views in real time. As diplomacy reshapes itself to respond better to new challenges, media technologies like Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube are being used extensively by diplomats, cabinet ministers and their communicators as a means of interacting with the public and to prioritise their foreign policy commitments. The conference was organized by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the City of Turin in collaboration with the Italian newspaper La Stampa, and hosted at the ILO Turin Centre. The event included contributions from Giulio Terzi, Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Piero Fassino, Mayor of Turin, Alec Ross, Senior Advisor for Innovation to the U.S. Secretary of State, Mario Calabresi, Editor-in-Chief of La Stampa, Lina Ben Mhenni, blogger and activist, and was moderated by Giuseppe Manzo, Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokesperson.
