Are we member-driven or staff-driven?
You’re a Board member of a Business Member Organization? Act like it! Make sure you share an understanding on your role and responsibilities as Board members and take a critical look at your working methods in view of serving the membership the best you can. This MOOC is THE opportunity to improve practice together by stepping back, having a good look at how your Board is working and by listening to the advice of experts and peers.
The question usually pops up when something is going wrong says John Barnes, from Barnes Association Consultants: when a member feels like a staff person has exceeded their decision-making authority or a Board member is micro-managing the staff implementation of a program!
A Business Member Organizations is and must remain members’ driven – that’s for sure. But beyond semantics, what is important is that the Business Member Organizations have the right rules, tools and attitudes to ensure that, in practice, they are “member-led” and “staff-implemented”.
This means that the different – and complementary – roles and responsibilities of the Board members on the one hand (ie. Governance) and the Secretariat of the organization on the other hand (ie. Management) are well understood.
This is one of the important questions at the core of the Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) offered by the Training Centre of the ILO.
