Essentials of Occupational Safety and Health – an innovative training package for EOs
Introduction to safety and health at work; personal protective equipment; work at height; fire and explosion; management of prevention – to name just a few topics covered by the Essentials of Occupational Safety and Health (EOSH) package developed by the programme for Employers’ Activities of ITC ILO.
The basic idea behind this approach is to support employers’ organisations in offering specialized training services for their members on Occupational Safety and Health. To help employers’ organizations in filling the existing niche, the Programme for Employers’ Activities of ITC ILO invented the innovative EOSH package.
The EOSH training package provides a flexible and multi-tool approach and uses films, animations, PowerPoint presentations, self-assessment quizzes, checklists for daily use as well as ILO and other agencies documentation to create a higher and lasting learning success.
This customizable approach allows the choice of the most appropriate learning path - based on the specific needs of each organization or sector – as well as to be able to train not only workers, but also supervisors and line-managers. All essential aspects linked to OSH for workers and supervisors are covered in 25 modules, each module consisting of an approximately 1,5 hour training session.
The Programme for Employers’ Activities provides a step-by-step support to employers’ organizations interested in setting up new training services using the EOSH package. This includes: advice to the training coordinator of the employers’ organization on how to build a sustainable business plan and successfully launch the new service and a blended course for future trainers selected by the employers’ organizations (they are either staff of the EOs or OSH consultants working for EOs on ad-hoc basis). The blended course includes: access to 30-hour distance learning training and an intensive three-day face-to-face Train the Trainers’ workshop which focuses mainly on the EOSH methodology to effectively deliver training courses.
At the end of the workshop, participants attend a final examination to obtain the ITC ILO certificate of achievement and officially become EOSH trainer. Facilitated by social media the EOSH trainers can stay in touch and share their experience and best practices among each other.
In recent years around 20 EOs all over the world were able to set up in a fully sustainable way training services using the EOSH package. To ensure this development, a special emphasis has been made on translating the product – since 2014 the EOSH package is further offered in French, Russian, Arabic, Bengali and Vietnamese.
Beyond this, a special project concerning OSH is currently taking place in Bangladesh.
