This academy is part of the International Labour Standards Academy. The academy is designed to provide knowledge to a wide audience, as well as strengthen understanding between groups of participants from different professions and global regions.

This academy examines how the ILS can be used to protect workers in non-standard jobs. Demographic shifts, labour market regulations, and technological innovation all factor into the recent uptick in non-standard employment. In particular, women, young people, and migrant workers face challenges.

This course analyses international labour standards relevant for employment arrangements that deviate from 'standard' employment. These include temporary employment, part-time and on-call work, agency work and multi-party employment, as well as disguised employment and dependent self-employment. The course also examines regional and national experiences and practices for addressing vulnerabilities associated with 'non-standard' employment.

What country experiences and innovative practices can provide guidance for addressing vulnerabilities associated with 'non-standard' employment?

  • Understanding of different types of ‘non-standard’ employment and related legal developments at the international and regional levels.
  • In-depth knowledge of ILS covering fixed-term work, agency work, part-time work, and ambiguous and disguised employment relationships, including work on digital labour platforms and through mobile applications.
How is the course organized?
  • Knowledge assessment at the start and at the end of the training. 
  • Participatory approach with Internet demonstrations, individual and group exercises followed by discussions in plenary.
  • Combination of legal and economic dimensions.
  • Synthesis exercise to draw practical conclusions on using what has been covered in the course in the participating countries.
