This course takes a practical approach to communication for development with the aim of effecting real change. It brings together professionals, academics and creatives and gives them a collaborative space to leverage their collective intelligence. The intention is that they learn from our instructors, as well as from one another. Are you ready to collaborate with bright communication professionals?

As always, participants are encouraged to share relevant work-related experiences and discuss what inspires them about the current communication landscape

What will you learn?

Participants explore communication ideas, from low-tech with a local reach to high-tech with a global reach, that are immediately applicable to their work.

Three areas of study for this year's course are:

  • How to make internet-free and low-budget communication projects come to life
  • What communication for development looks like from different perspectives, including international labour standards, environmental issues, and donor relations
  • All about cross-platform storytelling

Participants will be challenged to work on communication initiatives, which may involve:

  • Creating a communication strategy for an NGO with a low budget
  • Delivering a digital report for donors
  • Launching a global communication campaign

Participants that take this course use the design thinking process to craft wide-ranging communication products and development-driven stories.

Here are three things you'll be able to do after taking this course:

  • Use new tools and apps to improve communication efforts
  • Develop communication approaches that consider cultural differences and multiple audiences’ needs
  • Tell meaningful and engaging stories that stand out, both online and offline

This course aims to help participants use the design thinking process, which includes building empathy for key stakeholders, defining user personas, and understanding user journeys.

What did participants do last year?

Last year's participants organized into teams and used design thinking processes to create communication campaigns on topics such as:

  • Migrant workers in South Africa
  • Air pollution in urban India
  • Corruption in Nigeria
  • Sexual harassment in international organizations
  • The future of work
  • Online hate speech

Teams took to Instagram to implement the social media component of their campaigns.

What is design thinking?

The ITCILO’s Design Kit is a physical tool that helps teams take a human-centered approach to problem solving. Empathy and curiosity are the essence of the Design Kit—and of design thinking. Teams mix and match methods, come up with out-of-the-box ideas, and reach innovative solutions through hands-on collaboration.

In this course, in-house experts guide participants through a full design thinking workshop.

At the conclusion of the course, each participant receives a take-home Design Kit.

Why is communication for development relevant today?

The topic gathers a range of methods and tools, from local media to virtual reality, to maximize the impact of development initiatives.

How do I apply?

All the Centre's regular courses are open to candidates through grants or individual sources of funding. These candidates should send their applications directly to the ITCILO. 

Workers’ Activities and Employers’ Activities training courses are available by invitation only. Additional candidates may be accepted if they pay a fee and are approved by the Secretary of the Workers’ Group or Employers’ Group of the ILO Governing Body.

What are the criteria and qualifications required for admission?

The application procedure allows the Centre to match participants' needs to training activities. In general, it is important to specify language skills, job experience, and academic background.

What do the prices cover?

Tuition prices cover course preparation, implementation and evaluation, training materials and books, and the use of facilities and support services. For face-to-face courses, tuition also covers study tours (if planned) and emergency medical insurance.

Subsistence prices cover accommodation and full board on campus, laundry services (for courses longer than one week), and local study visits (if planned). For courses outside Turin, subsistence prices cover accommodation and full board, as well as incidentals, depending on the available facilities.

What if I need to cancel?

Cancellation of participation in standard courses will result in the following penalties:

  • 14 days or more prior to the start date of the course: No penalty, 100% refund of amount paid less applicable bank charges
  • 8 to 13 days prior to the start date of the course: Penalty of 50% of course price, refund of residual amount paid (if any) less applicable bank charges
  • 7 days or less prior to the start date of the course: Penalty of 100% of course price

How many participants are admitted?

Most courses accept between 20 and 30 participants. Academies may admit up to 100 participants.

What can I do to prepare?

Certain courses include a preliminary online learning phase. Participants should complete all online learning modules to prepare for the face-to-face phase.

Where will I stay?

Subsistence prices cover accommodation on the Centre's campus and three daily meals. Prices vary depending on course length.
