The aim of this course is to create a space in which consulting and training professionals (working primarily in development, and specifically in the micro and small-enterprise development sector) can learn how to improve the performance of their companies, firms or departments dealing with consultancy and training. They will be able to upgrade their professional standards and practices, and prepare a strategy for improving the sustainability of the unit they are managing. The course draws on ILO practices and experience accumulated as a result of the organization's global engagement in management and small-business development. It is practical in nature, providing real tools and insights, and drawing out the wisdom and experience already gained by members of the group. As a management course, it is designed not just to convey technical topics, but to broaden participants' perspectives, management potential and resource base. As a practical course, it will focus on applying course content to participants' actual challenges and opportunities in order to improve the performance of their companies or units. The course will also assist managers in identifying areas they would like to explore in more detail in the future.

Perfil dos participantes

The course targets a wide audience of professionals: - new entrants to the consulting profession; - independent management consultants or MSMEs; - consulting departments of development institutes; - internal consultants of commercial companies; - trainers and management consultants and experts; - managers engaged in consulting activities. Professionals involved in development consulting or managing a consulting business will find the course highly beneficial and helpful in upgrading their business management skills.

What will I learn?

The course has four specific objectives:

  • To broaden understanding of the various functions that contribute to the successful performance of the company
  • To supply a portfolio of tools that can assist managers to strengthen the performance of their unit or company
  • To stimulate the sharing of experiences and strategies for meeting current challenges.
  • To expose managers to management experiences from other parts of the world and inspire more innovative thinking about what might be possible the local environment.
Course framework

The e-learning course will be implemented over a period of approximately 5 weeks and is structured around 5 content modules with follow-up activities and assignments.

An equivalent of 1 day of learning is planned in each week and participants can take it on their own pace. Each week will also have a live webinar which will be shared in recording as well.

  • Week 1, 15-19 June: Module 1: Introduction and pre-course activities. Key trends in consulting and training provision.
  • Week 2, 22-26 June: Module 2: Strategic direction
  • Week 3, 29 June – 3 July: Module 3: Stakeholders, clients and donors
  • Week 4, 6 July – 10 July: Module 4: Growth and innovation
  • Week 5, 13 – 17 July: Module 5: Improving efficiency
  • 19 July: End of course activities and action planning

Course structure

Prior to the course participants will be requested to formulate their major learning goals and take a pre-course assessment.

During the course, each of the five learning modules of the course have a fixed structure and includes the following components:

1. Live Webinar, with the group and ITC ILO trainer and/or invited speakers

2. Individual self learning, activities and assignments, as well as group activities when possible

3. Forum discussions, self facilitated or facilitated by the ITC ILO trainers and tutors

4. Express test (assessment)

On the final day of the course final action planning, post-course assessment and evaluation of the programme will be conducted.

Upon completion of the course, participants receive a certificate of attendance.

Course content composition
  • A Live Webinar each week provides you with the content required for critical analysis of the subject, work on the activities and application to your own situation. All live webinars will be recorded and shared with the students in case when they cannot join it when delivered in live
  • A list of Essential Readings for the module, supporting the content of the module and the webinar.
  • A list of Additional Readings for the module
  • Activities and Case studies for an individual work or group work
  • Assignments for individual work and application to their own company or the unit, which translate into final action plan of each participant.
