Why a Fair Recruitment Initiative?

The ILO’s Fair Recruitment Initiative was launched in 2014. It aims to protect workers against abuse and exploitations, while at the same time meeting the needs of the labour market. It’s based on the ILO’s extensive experience in labour migration, forced labour, and much more.

Key elements of the initiative:

  1. Enhancing, exchanging, and disseminating global knowledge about national and international recruitment processes.
  2. Improving laws, policies, and enforcement to promote fair recruitment
  3. Promoting fair business practices
  4. Empowering and protecting workers

This phase (2021-2025) is all about building on the progress and tools developed over the past five years. It aims to operationalize practices and deepen knowledge on fair recruitment, protecting more workers, especially migrant workers. The initiative supports the reform of laws and practices – those of recruitment, international labour standards, social dialogue, and gender equality.

It’s time to take stock of achievements so far. The ILO has systematized promising practices along different migration corridors, covering areas such as: resource centres, public employment services, COVID-19 adaptations, employment centres, legal frameworks, bilateral agreements, and much more.

The Fair Recruitment Initiative fosters strong alliances with international and local partners to complement the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

What is the goal of the Fair Recruitment Initiative?

The initiative aims to raise awareness among key actors about the pillars, approach, and tools around promising recruitment practices. It also will help foster informal networks of experts and professionals who are committed to fair hiring in the region. The ultimate goal is to identify priorities for practical action.
