Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) helps make skills visible, valued and formally recognized, wherever and however they were acquired. Grounded in international frameworks such as ILO Recommendation No. 195 and the EU Council Recommendation on validation, this course introduces the key principles and practical steps for developing credible RPL systems. 

Participants will explore how RPL can support lifelong learning, employability, skilling, reskilling and upskilling through inclusive, quality-assured approaches.

  • Promote inclusive RPL approaches for diverse groups 
     
  • Link RPL to national skills, qualifications and lifelong learning systems 
How is the course organized?

The course is self-paced and structured into five modules: 

  • Introductory Module: Orientation and Diagnostic 
     
  • Module 1: RPL Foundations & Policy Alignment 
     
  • Module 2: Designing RPL Systems & Quality Assurance 
     
  • Module 3: Operations & Tools: Candidate to Decision 
     
  • Module 4: RPL for Skilling, Reskilling, Upskilling & the Just Transition 

Each module combines practical examples, interactive exercises, case studies and knowledge checks to support applied learning. 

Duration and modality

The course is delivered online and can be completed at your own pace. 

Upon completion of the modules and final assessment, participants will receive an ITCILO digital certificate of completion.
