The world of work is undergoing several transitions and transformations that are increasingly threatening the sustainability and resilience of social protection policies, systems, and programmes for workers in vulnerable economic sectors. Social protection coverage gaps are widening as informality expands, climate shocks intensify, and work becomes more precarious. Even where social protection schemes for informal economy workers exist, many still suffer from structural exclusion, weak financing, and fragmented programme design. The link between jobs and social protection also remains weak. Ensuring dignity and security for Africa’s most vulnerable workers starts with trade unions that can actively shape social protection systems, policies, and programmes—not just respond to them. Yet most trade unions across Africa often face structural barriers that limit their effective participation in national social protection governance. This course responds directly to these challenges. It equips trade unions with the skills, confidence, leadership, and tools to influence reforms, monitor implementation, demand accountability, negotiate innovative improvements, and protect vulnerable workers. If you want to be effective in shaping more responsive and resilient social protection systems for workers across Africa, this Academy is your pathway to transformative action.
