Risk management associated with the use of chemical substances in the workplace has gained great relevance from international and national regulations and from the interest of people and companies for protection against the potential effects of chemical substances. For this reason, the ILO with the cooperation of the European Union has developed this virtual course that will provide tools to manage these risks in the workplace.

All those involved in chemical risk management in the agricultural sector (agricultural workers and their representatives, agricultural employers and their representatives, consultants and trainers from public or private entities interested in the subject).

What will I learn?

Knowledge about the fundamental aspects for the management of the risk to the health of workers from exposure to chemical substances in agriculture.

What will I be able to do?

The overall objective of this course is to facilitate the acquisition of knowledge on the fundamental aspects of managing the risk to workers' health from exposure to chemicals in agriculture. Specifically, participants have the ability to:

  • Describe the types of chemicals in the agricultural sector, their classification and the risks to workers' health.
  • Give an overview of the purposes, classification and communication modalities of the Globally Harmonised System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS).
  • Explain the main chemical exposure activities in the agricultural sector, as well as the guidelines for managing this risk to prevent harm to workers' health.
  • Outline the guidelines and safe work procedures in the storage and disposal of chemicals in the agricultural sector, as well as the procedures to follow during an emergency.
How is the course organized?

The course is developed in a virtual and autonomous way, which allows the participants to have greater flexibility in the time of dedication and study schedules.

Before starting this course, you will be asked to answer a series of questions related to the course to find out your level of knowledge on the subject.

 The course material consists of the following 4 modules:

  1. Module 1 deals with the general aspects of chemicals.
  2. Module 2 deals with hazard communication from the globally harmonized system
  3. Module 3 deals with chemical risk management
  4. Module 4 deals with the storage, disposal of pesticides and procedures for an emergency

At the end of the careful reading of the 4 modules, you must take the final test to assess your understanding. If you pass this final test, you will obtain a Digital Certificate of the course.
