“Behind The Indian Boom” is based on a programme of research on inequality and poverty conducted by researchers, journalists and activists from the Department of Anthropology of the London School of Economics.

The Indian economy has been booming and is predicted to become one of the two largest economies in the world by mid-century.  But  what does this growth mean for the people on whose land and labour it is based? “Behind The Indian Boom” tries to answer this question by travelling across the country to meet its low-caste and tribal communities, historically stigmatized as ‘untouchable’ and ‘wild’. The photographs explore their precarious working conditions and the building of the infrastructure sustaining Indian economic growth.
