Artificial intelligence tools like ChatGPT are reshaping the workplace and being incorporated into anything from marketing to customer service and content creation. AI is also increasingly being used in human resources management to help drive decisions about hiring, retention and employee development. While the benefits of AI in the workplace are numerous, its integration is not without challenges. Concerns about data privacy, the potential for algorithmic biases, and the fear of inequality as certain types of jobs are automated faster than others are topics of ongoing debate. In parallel, the Metaverse, a new form of interaction in cyberspace, is attracting public attention due to significant investments by major companies. It includes augmented reality, 3D technology, avatars, and digital marketplaces. The use of the metaverse is still in its scouting phase, with relatively few employers providing their employees with virtual work spaces as yet. While it is far too early to assess the overall impact of the metaverse on employees, some potential risks, as well as legal issues, are already apparent. As AI becomes more entrenched in the workplace and the metaverse continues its march towards the working world, nation's legal systems must grapple with these implications to ensure that rights are upheld and that a fair, equitable workplace environment is maintained. This Knowledge-Sharing Series addresses the challenges and opportunities posed by these developments, discussing the legal implications of AI and the Metaverse on workers' rights.
