As labour disputes grow increasingly complex, conciliators/mediators must move beyond foundational techniques and develop advanced skills that allow for greater strategic thinking, emotional intelligence, and adaptability. Effective conciliation/mediation requires not only technical proficiency, but also the ability to manage power dynamics, reframe entrenched positions, and facilitate interest-based dialogue. These competencies are honed through focused practice, critical reflection, and guided learning. To further strengthen the capacity of practitioners engaged in conciliation/mediation processes, the ITCILO has developed this advanced course that is designed to deepen participants' strategic capabilities through a highly practical, skills-based learning approach. This course is intended to refine, expand, and assess the advanced competencies of conciliators/mediators already active in the field. It uses immersive case studies, structured simulations, and expert-guided analysis to foster mastery of complex conciliation/mediation techniques and conflict transformation tools. Please note that this course is Module 3 of the ITCILO learning path on Conciliation/Mediation of Labour Disputes. Therefore, to attend it, participants are required to have successfully attended Module 1 and Module 2.
The course is designed for staff from labour disputes agencies and Ministries of Labour involved in dispute prevention and resolution, employers' and workers' representatives, Industrial relations experts and practitioners as well as labour law lawyers.
