Introduction to the course

This self-guided E-learning module provides an introduction to the ILO’s Tripartite Declaration of Principles concerning Multinational Enterprises and Social Policy (MNE Declaration) using real cases that highlight how the principles of the MNE Declaration can be put into practice to address a range of labour and employment issues in different contexts.

Who attends this course?

The module is designed for government officials, and staff in employers’ organizations and workers’ organizations that deal with foreign direct investment (FDI), operations of multinational enterprises and corporate social responsibility (CSR) and their link to decent work. It also targets managers in multinational enterprises, responsible for human resources, corporate social responsibility, community development programmes, public affairs, procurement, supply chain management and labour relations.  Those interested in operations of multinational enterprises, CSR, the role of the private sector in development and FDI more broadly, may also find this module useful in their work.

What will I learn?

The course offers useful background information and an overview of the principles of the MNE Declaration, including exercises for the participants.

  • It presents real cases of how the principles of the MNE Declaration can be put into practice.
  • It explains how the MNE Declaration relates to other instruments and initiatives that guide business behaviour (such as the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises, the UN Global Compact, the UN Business and Human Rights Framework and Guiding Principles, and ISO 26000).
  • It provides an overview of the operational tools adopted by the ILO Governing Body to stimulate uptake by all parties.
  • It highlights the relevance of the guidance provided by the MNE Declaration to achieve decent work for all, a universal goal recognized in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
