Turin, 21 May 2026. The Turin School of Development (TSD), the academic arm of the International Training Centre of the ILO (ITCILO), will officially inaugurate its 2025–2026 year on Friday, 22 May, with a high-level event dedicated to the theme “Fair Transitions, Technology and Social Justice.”

The ITCILO has just published the substantive Report of the Forum on UN Capacity Development for Training Institutions, a joint event organized by the ITCILO and the UNSSC.

The last few days have been difficult and troubled. Like everyone else, we are being forced to redefine activities and rethink strategies.  But we continue to move forward with the projects we believe in. This story shows that the ACTION/Portugal Project, to take one example, is still in action!

The Centre has just signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the European University Institute (EUI).

Throughout this week, a delegation from the Manchester Metropolitan University, (seven participants in the Manchester Master's Course in Occupational Safety and Health and their coordinator) has been attending a series of joint sessions with participants in the ITCILO Master of OSH .

The students of the Master in Management of Development visited the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) in Geneva this week.

The Turin School of Development, part of the ILO’s International Training Centre, runs all the post-graduate training activities organized by the ITCILO, in conjunction with the University and Polytechnic of Turin.

This week students of the ITCILO’s Master in Management of Development analyzed the nexus between natural resources, conflict and development. Expert Oli Brown explored theoretical aspects and shared from his own experience, as well as guiding the students in solving a complex case study, working in teams.

As part of UNCTAD’s cooperation with the Master on Management of Development, expert Jean-Philippe Rodde, from UNCTAD’s Technical Cooperation Service, this week introduced students to the UN Development System in general and the role of UNCTAD in particular.

 

This was the theme of the talk given on 28 January by Mr Giuseppe Casale, Director of the Turin School of Development, to mark the opening, on the ITCILO campus in Turin, of the Master on Management of Development course.

20 January 2020 saw the opening on campus of four of the ten Masters organized by the International Training Centre of the ILO in partnership with the University and Polytechnic of Turin. The welcome address was given by Mr Giuseppe Casale, Director of the Turin School of Development and Deputy Director of the Centre.

 

The Decent Jobs for Youth Knowledge Facility, the ILO’s inclusive global initiative to improve youth employment through the sharing of knowledge resources and tools on the topic is being launched on 11 December 2019.

Several UN Agencies are participating in the Forum on UN Capacity Development for Training Institutions, scheduled for 10 and 11 December 2019.

On 19 November 2019, during the opening ceremony of the activity  entitled “Négocier des accords bilatéraux de sécurité sociale” (Rabat, Morocco), the ITCILO signed a one-year Memorandum of Understanding with the Moroccan Ministry of Labour and Professional Integration.

The purpose of this 2-year MOU is to provide a framework for future collaborative projects and activities in areas of common interest.

The Minister of Labour, Migration and Social Security of the Government of Spain, Magdalena Valerio, opened the 11th edition of the “Social and Solidarity Economy Academy: The Social Economy in the Future of Work ", held on 14–18 October in Madrid, to highlight the importance of this model of economy, which places people at the centre of its activity without losing sight of the enterprise dimension.

A tripartite SafeYouth@Work results and sustainability workshop was held on campus from 14 to 16 October 2019

It is the task of the Board to approve the general lines of the Programme of the Centre and its budget. A report of its meeting is submitted to the Governing Body of the ILO.

Twenty journalists and media professionals from Central and Eastern Europe and Central Asia will gather in Turin this week to explore the relevance of international labour standards (ILS) – which set out basic principles and rights at work – to accurate and responsible media reporting. The training will provide an opportunity to learn about the uses of ILS and the work of the ILO supervisory bodies in covering issues related to the world of work, thus raising public awareness of internationally recognized human and labour rights.

The International Forum on Youth Education and Leadership is taking place from 25 to 27 September 2019 in Xi’an (China) on the impressive new campus of the Northwestern Polytechnical University (NPU). 

Massive Open Online Courses have progressed beyond the experimental phase and are becoming an integral part of the learning and training offer of capacity-building agencies.

The 2019 GYLA Summer Programme* was inaugurated at the Centre on 5 August 2019 in the presence of Mr Moussa Oumarou, Deputy Director-General of the ILO. As part of the SURE project (Promoting the social and professional reintegration of migrants returning to North Africa), the ITC-ILO in collaboration with FIERI (Forum Internazionale ed Europeo di Ricerche sull'Immigrazione) has published three new research papers on return migration and social and professional reintegration mechanisms in Morocco and Tunisia.

As part of the ILO Skills-21 project, the ITCILO is training a group of Career Guidance Officers (CGOs) in Dhaka, from 28 July to 5 August 2019.

This summer, the Centre is pleased to welcome over 230 college students and tutors from China to join the Global Youth Leadership Academy (GYLA) Summer Programme on Building on Youth Talent: Developing the Next Generation of Global Leadership for the UN 2030 Agenda. 

Six ILO constituents from the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan are participating in a study visit, from 15 to 18 July 2019

The contribution of international labour standards (ILS) adopted by the International Labour Organization and covering all work-related matters is not limited to their impact on labour legislation. Indeed, ILS can also contribute to strengthening domestic case law on labour matters.

On Wednesday 3 July 2019, a Korean delegation visited the Centre to learn how it operates, visit the campus facilities and to obtain information about ITCILO’s training products.

The Academy on Skills Development will take place on the ITCILO Campus from 24 June to 5 July 2019, with 75 participants from 32 different countries. The Academy will encompass all major topics in the Skills Development environment, with more than 40 experts contributing during the two-week period.

The ITCILO is delivering the workshop “Gamification for Humanitarian Learning” in collaboration with the Humanitarian Leadership Academy and TechTribes.

This year’s World Day Against Child Labour (WDACL), celebrated on 12 June, has been an opportunity to reflect on the history of the movement to end child labour, its progress and challenges, and to advocate for rapid progress in achieving universal ratification of the child labour Conventions and SDG Target 8.7.

On 5 June 2019, World Environment Day has been celebrated on the theme of “air pollution”— a call to action to combat one of the greatest environmental challenges of our time. 

In conjunction with the International Labour Organization's CARING Gold Mining Project, funded by the U.S. Department of Labor, the first ever Inter-Regional Knowledge-Sharing Forum to discuss issues of child labour and working conditions in artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) was held in Manila from 28 to 30 May 2019.

This year, within the students’ programme we received 18 schools, including secondary and high school (plus some primary schools and 2 universities) with 35 classes for a total of 845 students.

Forty-four participants from 15 countries took part in a training activity on “Promoting quality apprenticeships in enterprises”, held on campus from 6 to 10 May 2019.

Learning Innovation is a cross-cutting strategic driver for the Centre, as stated in the ITCILO Learning Innovation Action Plan, and a key driver for the upcoming ITCILO Learning Innovation Lab.

On 11 April, a marathon series of events will take place all around the world in celebration of the ILO's 100th anniversary. From Fiji to Philadelphia, the ILO 24-Hour Global Tour will broadcast 24 events across 24 locations for 24 hours. The ITCILO will be live on air from 4 to 5 p.m. with a panel discussion on the Future of Learning. 

A group of students, participating in the recent Hackaton[1] on the future of work and the future of learning, discussed various scenarios during the ITCILO event for the ILO’s 24-hour Global Tour.

Report on a five-day ITCILO training activity on Decent Work 4 Sustainable Development, 8-12 April 2019. 

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the City of Turin have agreed to allocate funds to maintain and renovate part of the premises of the International Training Centre of the ILO in Turin. The Ministry’s contribution will be as much as three million euro, while the Centre will allocate up to 800,000 euro from its dedicated fund for this purpose.

What models are appropriate for a skills assessment system which integrates the key categories of migrants in Tunisia (potential migrants, returnees and foreign workers)? What data on internal, international and return migration is needed to adequately address the issues pertaining to target groups of migrants in Tunisia in active labour market policies? 

On Thursday 28 March 2019, a Norwegian delegation will visit the campus to learn how the Centre operates.

The exhibition, sponsored by the University of Turin, will be hosted on campus until 17 May. The official opening is on Wednesday 27 March, on the occasion of Biennale Democrazia 2019.

From 23 to 26 March, the Centre received the visit of Mr Patrick Nalere, Executive Director, and Ms Mary Muchengeti, Information Officer, of the African Regional Labour Administration Centre (ARLAC).

This training event is taking place in Rabat, Morocco, from 11 to 14 March 2019

A workshop entitled "Implementation of Methodology for Assessing Procurement Systems (MAPS)", organized by the World Bank, is taking place on campus from 11 to 15 March 2019.

The theme for International Women’s Day (8 March) is “Think Equal, Build Smart, Innovate for Change”

People from all over the world gathered to celebrate International Mother Language Day on the United Nations campus this Thursday, 21 February.

“If you want peace and development, work for social justice” is the theme of this year’s World Day of Social Justice, celebrated on 20 February. 

We’re not just about training… Last August, we hosted a film crew for several days on campus, where they shot a number of scenes in a series to be aired on Italian TV.

The delegation, consisting of Hon. Emanuela Claudia Del Re, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation; Minister Pl. Luigi De Chiara, Coordinator for Multilateral Development Policies, Directorate General for Development Cooperation, and Mr. Nicolamaria Coppola, Personal Assistant to the Deputy Minister, visited our campus on 12 February 2019.

Every year since 2014, the Centre has been awarded the International Eco-Schools Award Certificate (Green Flag) for its achievements in sustainable development education and management. 

The official launch of the Centenary and publication of the report of the Global Commission on the Future of Work took place on 22 January 2019 at ILO headquarters.

This winter, the Centre welcomes a new generation of leaders and entrepreneurs to the first edition of our “Winter Academy” in Turin, Italy. The Academy will take place on campus from 21 January to 1 February 2019, attended by 100 participants and 13 tutors from six top Chinese universities: Zhejiang University, Nanjing University, Nankai University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Northwestern Polytechnical University and Xi’an Jiaotong University. 

For the 6th consecutive year, the ILO Global Management Team is meeting in Turin.

The Partnership on Green Economy is organizing its 3rd International Conference in Cape Town, South Africa, on 10-11 January 2019, in collaboration with the Centre. Under the heading “Advancing Inclusive and Sustainable Economies”, the Conference will bring together some 500 delegates for a robust discussion on tools and strategies for shaping greener economies, with the aim of achieving the objectives of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris Agreement on Climate Change.
