Consensus-based conflict resolution methods, including conciliation/mediation, are increasingly recognized as quick and effective ways to resolve labour disputes, benefiting all parties and improving compliance with agreed outcomes. Guided by ILO principles, this course provides participants with solid skills and in-depth knowledge of conflict dynamics, conciliation/mediation approach, and the ITCILO four-step process, while strengthening key technical and soft skills key to be an effective conciliator/mediator.

  • Share knowledge and experience with peers and colleagues with different professional backgrounds and coming from all over the world thanks to group exercises and interactive activities.

Methodology

This standard course on conciliation/mediation of labour disputes runs for three weeks, requiring approximately 35 hours of engagement.

Participants will access the course through the ITCILO e-Campus portal, compatible with computers and portable devices. All course resources and activities are available on this platform, and learning is interactive and tutor-facilitated, with guidance and clarifications provided throughout.

Live Sessions:

  • Held on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays (timing is indicated according to Italy time).
  • Attendance is mandatory and recorded.
  • Minimum 75% active participation (with camera on) is required to obtain the course certificate.

Performance Evaluation:

  • Weekly multiple-choice quizzes reinforce learning and assess understanding of course topics.
  • Practical coursework assignments are completed during the week and reviewed by the tutor in the following live session.
  • The course features live role play exercises, where participants are evaluated in real time by the tutor.
Language

The entire training program will be conducted in English. Therefore, a good command of this language is required.

Attendance requirements

To successfully complete this course, participants must:

  • Attend at least 75% of all live sessions – attendance is recorded
  • Actively participate in all live sessions with the camera on.
  • Ensure technical readiness: stable internet, computer/laptop with working camera, microphone, and headset, and a quiet environment.
  • Follow course conduct rules; the ITCILO is not responsible for unsuccessful completion if these requirements are not met.

If your application is sponsored by your Institution, you will be required to attach a sponsorship letter, covering the course fees.

Applications will be reviewed through a standardized selection process. Successful candidates will be notified individually.

Payment and withdrawal
  • The total price of this training activity must be paid in advance by the participant or his/her sponsoring organization.
  • If an enrolled participant wishes withdraw from a course, they must notify the Centre, in writing, of their decision at least 14 days prior to the start date of the course.

Continue Your Learning Journey

This course is part of the ITCILO Conciliation/Mediation Learning Path, designed to progressively strengthen participants’ knowledge and applied skills in dispute resolution. After completing this Module 1, participants can advance to Module 2 – the Certification Course, which focuses on the formal assessment and recognition of professional competence.
