Conciliation/mediation skills are not innate - they require structured learning, self-reflection, and sustained practice. This five-day residential programme at the ITCILO Campus in Turin is the intensive, face-to-face path to certification in conciliation/mediation of labour disputes. It combines Module 1 and Module 2 in a single week - allowing participants to build their knowledge and have their competencies formally assessed against the internationally recognised ITCILO Matrix of Competences, without the need to have previously completed the online Module 1 course. Please note that this course does not grant professional accreditation or imply any right to employment with a dispute resolution body. Places are limited to 18 participants to ensure the quality of coaching and individual tutor attention.

This course is designed for practitioners who prefer intensive face-to-face learning and wish to obtain both foundational knowledge and formal certification in conciliation/mediation within one week. Participants typically include: Staff of labour dispute agencies and ministries of labour Employers' and workers' representatives Industrial relations experts and practitioners Practising conciliators and mediators seeking formal certification Labour lawyers and legal advisers Maximum 18 participants - places are strictly limited to ensure the quality of the assessment process.

The ITCILO Conciliation/Mediation Learning Path is a structured progression of courses designed to take practitioners from foundational knowledge to internationally recognised certification in labour dispute resolution. This residential programme provides a fast-track route through Module 1 and Module 2, leading directly to certification — with only the free introductory self-paced course as a prerequisite. Participants who wish to continue can advance to Module 3 — Advanced Skills for Conciliators/Mediators after completing this programme.

Principles and ethics of conciliation/mediation

Neutrality, impartiality, confidentiality, and voluntariness — the foundational principles of conciliation/mediation practice, aligned with ILO standards on collective bargaining and labour relations.

Soft skills for conciliation/mediation

Active listening, reframing, empathy, and trust-building in complex and high-pressure dispute scenarios.

Process, problem, and people management skills

Full application of the ITCILO four-step process across all stages; identifying interests behind positions; managing power imbalances, impasses, and emotionally complex situations.

Communication skills

Advanced communication strategies for guiding parties toward consensus in complex alternative dispute resolution contexts.

Role-plays and formal assessment exercises

Four assessed exercises in a face-to-face setting: two coached sessions and two formally evaluated live role-plays with expert assessors present in the room. Each session lasts approximately four hours in small groups.
